How these rates are set
The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter, broadly in line with government bond yields, and announces them shortly before the quarter starts. They often stay the same for several quarters.
- Locked in when you invest: SCSS, Monthly Income Scheme, NSC, KVP, Time Deposits and RD. Later changes don't affect a deposit you've already made.
- Change every quarter: PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi and the savings account. The new rate applies to your whole balance.
Tax
PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi interest is tax-free. Interest on the others is taxable at your slab rate. In the old tax regime, deposits in PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi, NSC, SCSS and the 5-year Time Deposit count towards section 80C. See the income tax calculator.
