How EPF contributions work
You contribute 12% of your basic pay + DA every month. Your employer also contributes 12%, but 8.33% of it goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) — capped at ₹1,250 a month (8.33% of the ₹15,000 wage ceiling) — and only the rest reaches your EPF account. The pension builds separately and isn't part of the corpus shown here.
You can contribute more than 12% as Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF); it earns the same rate. Your employer's contribution stays at 12%.
How interest is calculated
EPFO works out interest every month on your running balance and credits it once a year, when it compounds. The rate is declared each year (8.25% for 2023-24 and 2024-25); this projection assumes the rate you enter stays the same until retirement.
EPF is tax-free on withdrawal after 5 years of continuous service. Interest on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable, which this calculator doesn't deduct.
