How advance tax works
Tax is due as you earn, not when you file. Salaried people mostly pay through TDS; income without TDS (business profit, freelance fees, rent, interest above what's deducted, capital gains) needs advance tax in four instalments. Pay online through the Income Tax Department's e-Pay Tax service.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 kept the same dates and interest rules for tax year 2026-27; only the section numbers changed (408 for the instalments, 424 and 425 for interest, previously 211, 234B and 234C).
How this calculator works
- Slab tax comes from the income tax calculator's rules for 2026-27, with cess. Gains on listed shares and equity funds are added at 20% (short term) and 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh (long term); for other gains use the capital gains calculator.
- The 87A rebate isn't given against those gains, and none applies when total income with gains is above the limit. Surcharge on gains (above ₹50 lakh of income) isn't included.
- Interest is an estimate: 1% a month on each instalment's shortfall, with no interest if 12% is paid by June and 36% by September. Gains that arise after an instalment date can be paid with the next one; that relief isn't shown.
Results are estimates for illustration only, not financial advice. Banks and schemes may round, apply TDS or use slightly different day counts — confirm figures with your bank or employer. Written by the Welthr team; last reviewed on .
